MOLLY & MUCKY
ILLUSTRATION & CREATIVE COPYWRITING // STUDENT WORK // ART DIRECTION: KAREN WATKINS // 2018
the challenge
Develop a project of personal preference based on the word “Play.”
I wanted to truly challenge myself and actually be able to “play” everyday in the classroom. My teacher looked at me as if I was crazy bringing a 20lb bag of mud into class. Every illustration in the book was created by hand with real mud and then photographed and edited in Photoshop.
The approach
Inspired by my niece and nephew’s desire to create messes wherever possible, I wanted to write and illustrate a children’s short story based on a little girl named Molly and her mud friend, Mucky. Molly enjoys everything disgusting; from toe cheese to boogers, while Mucky likes to bake mud pies and make mudslides. Follow them through their mudnificent adventures and find out what makes them best friends.
The Results
The final deliverable was a hardcover perfect bound book. The result? Smiles and loads of laughter from my niece, Giovanna, and nephew, Michael, which to me is more than enough.
